Power Smart Homes: Where’s The Draft Coming From?

By Kari Kylo, BC Hydro Power Smart

Did you know that you can reduce the heat loss in your house by 5 - 10 per cent simply by sealing gaps and cracks around your windows and doors with caulking and weather stripping?

Draft proofing your home doesn’t take very much of your time, and it is extremely cost effective. When you are finished draft proofing, not only will you feel warmer, but you will also save money every month on your heating bills.

You can also consider replacing your old windows with ENERGY STAR® windows. Single-pane windows and old double-pane windows with metal frames perform poorly in keeping heat in or out of your home.

If your budget doesn’t allow you to change all your windows at once, plan to install south and west facing windows first. These windows generally have the largest impact on your comfort and energy savings performance. Next, install new windows where your family spends most of their time.

You will notice a decrease in outside noise, and an increase in comfort with ENERGY STAR® windows. They are also aesthetically pleasing, and ENERGY STAR-labelled windows are exempt from Provincial Sales Tax, and exempt from GST at select window retailers during the month of October, 2009.

The best way to identify the most energy-efficient window is the ENERGY STAR® label.
